Samples must come from sound wood free from deterioration and insect damage. We recommend that samples be approximately 1-inch long and 1-inch in cross section. They may be larger. For high-value materials, samples can be as small as 1/4-inch x 3/8-inch, however, the accuracy of the identification may be decreased. Each sample should be labeled and bagged separately. Supplemental information including the dimensions of the item sampled, the structure or item's age (if known), and the general location of the structure can be helpful for an accurate identification. Samples are not returned unless requested. Most results can be returned within 3 days of receiving the samples.
